About Us

You probably know us as the people who collect tax, but there’s far more to us than that. We’ve moved beyond our traditional business of assessing and collecting direct and indirect taxes and providing valuation services. We’re now responsible for National Insurance, making sure the National Minimum Wage is properly paid, paying tax credits, collecting student loans and strengthening the UK’s frontiers.

Our aim is to administer the tax and customs control systems fairly and efficiently and make it as easy as possible for individuals and businesses to understand and comply with their obligations and receive their tax credit and other entitlements.

HM Revenue and Customs [HMRC] was formed in April 2005, bringing together the Inland Revenue and HM Customs & Excise. We have a turnover of around £406 billion in tax, duty and National Insurance contributions, an annual budget of over £1.5 billion and over 50 million individual and corporate customers. We’re a big organisation, employing approximately 100,000 people, many of them in customer service roles, in call centres, going out visiting customers and working in Customs control.

We have moved to continuously improve our customer service, aiming to help and encourage our customers to meet their obligations, as well as enforcing the compliance of those who are deliberately avoiding their responsibilities.

We are also committed to provide more challenging and rewarding work for our staff.

We have opportunities for Corporate Tax Planning Specialists, Transfer Pricing Specialists and Economists to work in the Large Business Service in any of the following locations: London, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, Newcastle, Nottingham, Reading, Birmingham or Bristol.
